This short course will explore massive open online courses, commonly known as MOOCs. Usually offered by universities in combination with an online provider, MOOCs draw tens of thousands of students on a wide range of topics, and are growing ever more common. This course is a quick introduction to the MOOC phenomena, and will discuss what MOOCs are, where they came from, and look at the different types of MOOCs. It will investigate different perspectives on the role and influence of MOOCs in higher education: do they live up to the hype?
